Tamoxifen (Monotherapy): what to expect

A daily hormone-blocking pill taken for years. Hot flashes are common early; rare but important risks (blood clots, uterine changes) build slowly over time and are why any leg swelling or abnormal bleeding should be reported.

ORAL daily, for years. There is NO infusion cycle. Hot-flash/gynecologic effects emerge over weeks; the serious risks (blood clots, uterine cancer) are rare per year but CUMULATIVE over exposure-years — an infusion-day model does not apply.

Get help straight away — this is true on any regimen, on any day.

A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher during treatment can mean a serious infection while your blood counts are low. Call your team or go to the ER — do not wait it out.

Also urgent: trouble breathing or chest pain · swelling of the face, lips or throat · new confusion or fainting · shaking chills · not being able to keep fluids down.

Hot flashes

Sudden warmth, flushing, or sweating — the most common effect, developing over the first weeks and often ongoing.

Blood clots (VTE)

A higher chance of clots in the legs or lungs. Uncommon, but the risk adds up over time — so new leg swelling or breathlessness needs a prompt call.

Call your team urgently: Swelling, pain, or warmth in one leg, or sudden shortness of breath/chest pain — urgent.

Uterine changes

rare, cumulative over years

A small increase in the risk of uterine (endometrial) changes, including cancer. Rare, and builds over years — which is why any unusual vaginal bleeding should be checked.

Call your team urgently: Any unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting — report it to your team.

Vaginal discharge
