AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia)28-day cycle8 effects documented
An intensive inpatient chemo to bring leukemia into remission. Your blood counts will drop very low for a couple of weeks — this is expected and closely managed with transfusions, antibiotics, and monitoring. The key risks the team watches are infection (fever), mouth sores, and bleeding; a temporary but important early risk is tumor lysis.
Cytarabine (7-day continuous infusion) + an anthracycline like daunorubicin (3 days) — intensive AML induction, given as an inpatient. Very low blood counts are EXPECTED and planned-for (deep nadir ~days 15-24, recovery ~days 21-28), not a surprise complication — the team supports you through it. The meaningful things to watch are fever/infection, mouth sores, and bleeding.
Get help straight away — this is true on any regimen, on any day.
A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher during treatment can mean a
serious infection while your blood counts are low. Call your team or go to the ER — do not
wait it out.
Also urgent: trouble breathing or chest pain · swelling of the face, lips or throat ·
new confusion or fainting · shaking chills · not being able to keep fluids down.
This is standing guidance shown to everyone. Nothing on this page is based on anything
about you, and nobody is monitoring you.
One of the 8 entries below is marked provisional.
They are shown because leaving them out would be its own distortion, but they have not yet
been checked against the source document by a person, and they are not presented as
authoritative. Every provisional entry is labelled where it appears.
Timed to the cycle
Day 1 is the day of your infusion. These are the effects a retrievable
document ties to a day range for this regimen — not a prediction about you.
'Cytarabine syndrome' (fever, aches)
During or just after an infusion
Some people get fever, muscle/bone aches, malaise, and sometimes a rash or eye redness within 6-12 hours of a dose. It usually settles within a day; a steroid can help. Tell your team so infection can be ruled out.

Mouth sores (mucositis)
Typically around days 3–14 · usually worst around days 7–14
Soreness or ulcers in the mouth and throat, usually in the first 1-2 weeks. Regular mouth care, pain relief, and sometimes IV nutrition support help.
Call your team: Can't eat or drink because of mouth pain.

Not tied to a cycle day
These build with the number of doses, or are measured from when treatment started, so a cycle day would be the wrong shape for them. Each keeps the timing its own source states.
Very low blood counts (expected)
deep nadir ~days 15-24; recovery ~days 21-28
Deep drops in white cells, platelets, and red cells are the INTENDED effect of clearing the marrow — near-universal and planned-for. The low point is usually days 15-24, with recovery around days 21-28. You'll have transfusions and close monitoring as support.
reported by about ~100% (expected) of people; severe in ~100% · from Cytarabine, Daunorubicin
Fever and infectionPROVISIONAL
Because white cells are very low, infections (often with fever) are the leading risk and are treated urgently with antibiotics. You'll usually be on preventive antimicrobials; any fever is taken seriously.
Call your team urgently: Any fever, chills, or feeling suddenly unwell — tell staff immediately.
reported by about very common (documented infection ~17% by day 90; neutropenic fever in most)% of people · from Cytarabine, Daunorubicin
Tumor lysis syndrome
at the start of induction
As leukemia cells break down quickly at the start of treatment, they release salts that can stress the kidneys and heart. Your team prevents this with IV fluids and a uric-acid-lowering medicine and checks bloodwork often in the first days.
Call your team: Much less urine than usual, severe cramps, or a fast/irregular heartbeat.
reported by about ~17% (5% clinical, 12% lab) of people · from Cytarabine, Daunorubicin
Nausea
Sickness in the first 24 hours is the "acute" phase and usually peaks 2-3 hours in; anything from 24 to 120 hours is the "delayed" phase.
Usually mild-to-moderate and controlled with anti-nausea medicine.
reported by about common (usually mild)% of people · Timing from a clinical guideline · from Cytarabine, Daunorubicin
Hair loss
Hair loss is common and grows back after treatment.
reported by about most patients% of people · from Daunorubicin
Heart-muscle weakening (cardiotoxicity)
cumulative across all anthracycline exposure; can be delayed
The anthracycline can affect the heart's pumping; a single standard induction is usually below the higher-risk dose range, but your lifetime anthracycline total is tracked. Your team may check heart function; report breathlessness or swelling.
Call your team: New shortness of breath, swelling, or a rapid/irregular heartbeat.

Where this comes from
S1. Cytarabine FDA prescribing information (nadir timing; 'cytarabine syndrome'; high-dose-specific effects) — FDA label
S2. Daunorubicin FDA prescribing information (cumulative cardiotoxicity; hyperuricemia) — FDA label
S3. Montesinos P, tumor lysis syndrome in AML induction (2008) — PMID 18166787
NCI PDQ — Oral Complications of Chemotherapy (health professional) — “first signs of mucositis 3 to 4 days after infusion ... highest severity between days 7 and 14” source
Definitional — an infusion reaction is one that occurs during or shortly after the infusion — “The timing is part of what the term denotes; there is no empirical claim here to source.”
A window appears here only where a retrievable document ties it to a drug in
this regimen. Where nothing could be found, the window was removed rather than estimated —
so a missing time is an honest gap, not an oversight.
